五.There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions
or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marded a,b,c,and
d.You should decide on the best choice and circle the corresponding letter on
the Answer Sheet.(20%)
Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:
Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence.
They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basis of good
behaviour in society, and was reading English literature.
At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal
education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other
young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William
and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training
then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such
as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, In later years, Washington
progbably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable
in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday
practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak
directly to the French leaders, he didn’t visit the country he admired so much.
Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adamsm he never reached Europe.
51.What reason does the author give for Washington not going to college?
a. His family could not afford it.
b. A college education was rather uncommon in his time.
c. He didn’t like the young Virginian gentlemen who went to college.
d. The author doesn’t give any reason.
52.Washington felt uncomfortable in Congress debates because he _____
a. lacked practice in public speaking.
b. felt his education is inadequate.
c. didn’t like arguing and debating with people.
d. felt that the others were being impractical.
53.The reason why Washington didn’t visit France was probably he ______.
a. didn’t really care about going
b. didn’t know the French leaders
c. could not communicate directly with the French people
d. was too busy to travel
54.According to the author _____
a. Washington was a model for all Virginian gentlemen.
b. Washington should have gone to France even though he couldn’t speak French.
c. Washington was not as good as a president as Adams, Jefferson or Madison.
d. Washington’s lack of education placed him at a disadvantage in later life.
55.The main idea of the passage is that Washington’s education ______.
a. was of great variety, covering many subjects.
b. Was probably equal to those of most young gentlemen of his time.
c. may seem poor by modern standards, but was good enough for his time.
d. was rather limited for a president. 转贴于:自学考试_博学在线
Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.
Have you ever seen a movie in which a building was burned down or a bridge was
destroyed?Have you seen films in which a train crashed or a ship sank into the
ocean? If so, you may have wondered how these things could happen without harming
the people in the file.
The person who knows the answer is the "special-effects" person. He has one of
the most important jobs in the film industry.
In a scene for one movie there was a big glass bowl filled with water in which
small fish were swimming. The director of the movie wanted the fish to stop
swimming suddenly whilt they seemed to stare at an actor. Then the director wanted
the fish to stoop staring and awim away. But fush can’t be ordered to do anything.
It was quite a problem.
The special-effects person thought about this problem for a long time. The ersult
was an idea for controlling the fish with a harmless use of electricity. First
hwe applied electricity to the fish bowl, causing the fish to be absolutely still.
Then he rapidly reduced the amount of electricity, allowing the fish to swim away.
Thuas he got the humorous effect that the director wanted.
As in other parts of movie making, there are those who have developed particular
skill in creating certain kinds of effects. Jim White, who has been a
special-effects person for thirty-two years, is best known for work with ships
and airplanes.
Calmly he builds and crashes airplanes or sends tiny models of ships on dangerous
voyages. For a movie about World War Ⅱ he built a boat which was a copy of a
real ship. The copy was made of wood and was 165 feet long. As it sailed along
at a speed of seven sea miles an hour in the Pacific Ocean, it seemed so real
that a United States military airplane flew down near it, trying to discover which
country owned it.
All the special effects require training, skill, and experience. It also adds a
great deal to the expense of producing the film. It helps explain why so many
movies are expensive to make.
56.The special-effects people’s job is important because _____.
